Mr. Guffey is a patent attorney and former senior manager in the industrial products industry. As such, he has a uniquely broad background that provides him with insight into the business, legal and strategic challenges facing technology oriented entrepreneurs.
Mr. Guffey provides legal services that concentrate on enabling his clients to maximize the returns on their intellectual endeavors. This usually involves assisting his clients in protecting and managing, in the most cost-effective manner, the patent aspects of their intellectual property portfolios. His particular areas of technical expertise are in the fields of fluid dynamics and mechanical engineering as applied to a broad range of manufacturing technologies.
His clients include major research universities, manufacturing companies, medium and small-sized service businesses, and individual inventors and entrepreneurs.
Mr. Guffey began his career with Owens-Corning, where he invented and patented lower-cost, thermal building insulation, manufacturing processes. He quickly became a R&D manager with responsibilities for strategic planning, including monitoring the patent portfolios of business competitors. As the Technical Director of the Glass Fiber Division, Evanite Fiber Corporation, he helped build a glass microfiber manufacturing venture into a viable business that is today a key raw material supplier to the nonwoven media industry. A senior management career followed. This included service as the Vice President of Research & Development for the Evanite Fiber Corporation and as the Chief Operating Officer of GFT, Inc., a start-up business in textile, glass fiber manufacturing.
He is a member of many professional associations, including the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the Intellectual Property Law Section of the American Bar Association. He is a principal founder of the Intellectual Property Law Section of the Maryland State Bar Association and was elected its first Chairperson.
